Pantonic Steel Orchestra - Not just a Steel Orchestra but a Family!
Pantonic Steel Orchestra was founded in 1988 in Hackney, London, by Ezekiel ‘Biggs’ Yearwood, who built and tuned the steelpans, and Raymond Joseph, who arranged for the band. Their shared vision was to create a musical family rooted in culture, creativity, and community. Sadly, Raymond passed away in 1992, but the band continued to grow from strength to strength.
1990s
During the 1990s, Pantonic rose to prominence, placing 2nd in the National Panorama competition in 1994and 1995. The band also proudly toured France, showcasing Caribbean steelpan culture on an international stage.

Community
After their last Panorama performance in 1998, Pantonic shifted its focus towards community development, music education, and youth involvement. The band became a regular feature in local events, especially Hackney Carnival, where they earned 1st Place for Best Music multiple times throughout the 2010s.

Next Generation
In 2011, the next generation of Pantonic was born – featuring ‘Biggs’ great-grandchildren, extended family, and new community members alike. It was a revival of legacy and passion, welcoming all into the Pantonic family.

The band remained active in the creative arts scene, appearing on Come Dine With Me, Apple Tree House, and performing live with James Arthur at V Festival 2017.
In 2019, Pantonic entered the Steelpan Trust’s Pan Clash competition, showcasing the talent of younger members and continuing their mission to nurture and uplift the next generation.

COVID
The pandemic brought its challenges, but Pantonic kept the spirit alive through online content and community engagement. As restrictions lifted, the band returned to their panyard, rebuilding, rehearsing, and developing their skills together.
2024: Comeback
After more than two decades, Pantonic returned to Notting Hill Carnival in 2024, achieving 2nd Place for Best Steelband on the Road, and once again claiming 1st Place for Best Music at Hackney Carnival — a proud and emotional return for the entire team.
The band is now led by Lynette, ‘Biggs’ granddaughter, with support from a strong family line including his daughter Helen and son Grafton. Pantonic has always embraced diversity, both in its membership and its musical repertoire, which includes calypso, soca, reggae, jazz, classical, and pop.
