Akil Yearwood is a member of the Pantonic Steel Orchestra for the past seven (7) years. Carrying the legacy of his great grandfather, the legendary, “Biggs” Yearwood. Akil grew up around the steelpan instrument and its music, being motivated to join Pantonic and explore his musical talents.
Many of his family members joined the band around the same time; this action proved to be a positive catalyst to bond and socialise with his family, relatives, friends and acquaintances as well as make new friends and expand his social network.
Over the years Akil has developed not only as a panist and drummer but also as a musician, arranging musical pieces for Pantonic Steel Orchestra and also for PSO’s Youth Beginners. His musical quest sees him involved in music workshops that assist in broadening his musical knowledge and perception.
Akil has also performed in the UK’s iconic National Steel Band Panorama competition for the past 3 years with the Metronomes steel orchestra; this has proven to be a positive step in his musical journey and has definitely developed him as a pan player.
Akil is currently in his first year at University studying "Popular music performance Drums". Outside of his musical commitments with PSO, he is also an accomplished pianist and a member of a jazz band, a soul band as well as his local church band.
Akil’s has a two- year vision for PSO that focuses on the recruitment of more players to enable the band’ grow in size and musical development. To achieve this he also needs to get a new panyard to accommodate this expansion and also to host more workshops. His ultimate vision is to see Pantomic return to its glory days when they competed in the UK National Steel band Panorama competition.
