The Birth of the Steelpan - T&T National Instrument

The Birth of the Steelpan - T&T National Instrument

Dr Len ‘Boogie’ Sharpe

In Trinidad, a sound is born,

From the heat of the forge and the rhythm of the morn.

With hammers, the metal is shaped,

Into a circular drum, with notes that escape.

The steelpan sings, a melody pure,

As skilled hands strike it, to make it endure.

From high to low, the range it can reach,

A symphony of sound, that's within its reach.

From calypso to jazz, and all in between,

The steelpan creates, a musical scene.

The beat of the drums, the sound of the steel,

A celebration of life, that we can all feel.

In the sun or the rain, the steelpan can play,

A sound that lifts us up, on a gloomy day.

So let us dance and sing, to the beat of the drum,

For the steelpan is here, and its music has come.
