Harlow Steelband – Celebrating their 20th Anniversary!
Harlow Steelband is a vibrant and dynamic musical ensemble based in Harlow, Essex. With the support of Harlow Council and London’s esteemed Ebony Steelband, Harlow Steelband was established and they are currently celebrating their 20th anniversary. They offer free weekly steel pan lessons to the young people of Harlow, and require no previous experience. The aim of the Band is to give youngsters the chance to channel their time and energy productively, learn new skills, achieve a sense of purpose, whilst bringing together all abilities, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and having fun.
Harlow Steelband was led by former tutor, Sam Dubois, for the last 20 years. Now entering a new and exciting era, Harlow Steelband’s very own Daniel Barwick is now the band leader, having played with the band for over 15 years, joined Ebony in Panorama, competed in Junior Panorama with Harlow Steelband in 2009, teaches pans in local schools, as well as becoming an accomplished musician. With a diverse repertoire that spans traditional calypso songs and popular covers, their commitment to musical excellence and passion for sharing this unique instruments shines through in every performance, leaving a lasting impression on all who have the pleasure of experiencing their music.
Through their dedication to preserving and promoting the art form of steel pan music, Harlow Steelband continues to inspire and entertain audiences. With the help of the Jack Petchy Foundation, in 2017 they recorded their first album, selling their CDs to those who wish to bring a piece of the Caribbean to their homes through Harlow Steelband. The Band has a wealth of experience performing at a wide range of events. Some examples of audiences they have entertained include: Celebrate Harlow at the local Playhouse, local firework displays, weddings, carnivals, community events, Harlow Pride, Christmas Light Switch Ons, and even the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay!
Harlow Steelband has recently become Harlow Councils chosen charity of 2024/2025 which will tremendously help to continue providing free classes to local young people and perform in the community, spreading the Caribbean vibes whatever the weather.
